Large kitchen retailers often work from a fixed catalogue, you choose from what is on their shelf, and if it doesn’t quite fit your space, you compromise. As an independent kitchen company, we do not have that constraint. Our designers can bring in whichever range, worktop, or appliance suits your kitchen.
It also means the person who designs your kitchen is the same person you’ll speak to if anything changes after your survey, and the same team will be on site during the fitting. Nothing gets handed off to a call centre or another branch halfway through; just one team, from the first conversation to the finished kitchen.

Browsing is free between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday, or 10am to 3pm on Saturdays, no appointment needed if you’d simply like to browse. A well-designed kitchen should reflect the way you live, not the way a catalogue is laid out. Every room has its own challenges, every household has its own routines, and every budget has its own priorities. That’s why our design process begins with your home, not a brochure.

Every kitchen we design starts from the same two questions: what does this room need to do for you, and what is actually possible within its walls, its budget, and its timeframe? Everything below, the free consultation, the home visit, the 3D layout, the honest conversation about spend, exists to answer those two questions properly before a single unit gets ordered.

Your Free Design Consultation

Every project starts with a phone call or a visit to our Ongar showroom, where we talk through roughly what you’re after, style, must-haves, rough budget, before anything gets measured. There’s no pressure and no obligation at this stage; it is simply a conversation to work out whether we are the right fit for your project, and for you to see enough of our ranges in person to know if any of them catch your eye.

From there, we book in a home visit. This is where the “free” in free design consultation actually earns its name: no fee for the visit, no fee for the design that follows, and no obligation to place an order once you’ve seen it. If, after all that, you decide it is not for you, that’s absolutely fine.

What to Bring to Your First Consultation

You do not need to arrive with a finished vision, and most people do not. It helps if you can bring rough measurements of the room, even a phone photo of a tape measure against a wall is a useful starting point, along with a note of your budget range and any must-haves you already know about: a bigger fridge, a specific hob type, somewhere to put a growing collection of cookbooks. Photos of kitchens you like are useful too, even if you cannot say exactly why you like them; a good designer can usually spot the pattern in what you’ve saved and use it to steer the conversation.

The Home Visit: What We Actually Measure

A kitchen designer’s home visit is not a five-minute tape-measure job. We take proper, accurate measurements of the room itself, wall lengths, ceiling height, window and door positions, and anything that is not square or level, because very few kitchens actually are. We also look at where your existing plumbing, gas, and electrics sit, since moving a sink or a cooker point is not always as simple as it looks on paper, and it changes what a layout can realistically achieve.
Just as important, we ask about how you actually use the room. Do you cook every night or mostly reheat and go? Do you want an island you can sit at, or is floor space for a growing family more important than a breakfast bar? Is this a kitchen that needs to survive a dog and three children, or is it a quieter household where finish and detail matter more than durability? None of this shows up on a tape measure, but it shapes almost every decision that follows, which units go where, how much storage you actually need, and which of our ranges will suit the way you live rather than just how the room photographs.

From Measurements to a Working Layout

Once we’ve got accurate measurements and a sense of how you live, our designers put together a full layout using 3D design software, so you can see the room as it will actually look rather than trying to picture it from a floor plan. This is also where choosing between ranges gets easier: seeing Winslow’s painted Shaker doors against your actual wall colours, or Aylesford’s Graphite units under your actual ceiling height, tells you far more than a photo of someone else’s kitchen ever will.
We’ll usually put together more than one layout option if there’s a genuine choice to make, an island versus a peninsula, for example, or where to place tall units versus base units, so you’re deciding between real alternatives rather than approving the only version you’ve seen. For an open-plan kitchen-diner, we’ll also model how the kitchen reads from the dining or living side of the room, since a layout that looks right from the doorway doesn’t always look right from the sofa.

Being Honest About Where to Spend and Where to Save

Our designers are clever with space and budget, and that’s not just a line. It means telling you plainly where bespoke joinery is worth the money and where a standard cabinet does exactly the same job for considerably less. A run of full-height bespoke pantry cabinetry built into an awkward alcove is often worth every penny, because nothing off-the-shelf will fit it properly. A plain end panel on a run of standard units, on the other hand, rarely needs to be bespoke just because the rest of the kitchen is, and a worktop with a mitred joint in the right place can look just as good as one machined from a single slab for a fraction of the cost.
We would rather have that conversation upfront than let you find out later that half your budget went on details nobody will ever notice. If a full renovation is not affordable in one go, we’ll also tell you honestly which parts of a design can sensibly be phased, new cabinetry now, a worktop upgrade later, for example, rather than pretending everything has to happen at once.

Our Brand Partnerships in Your Design

Part of getting a design right is making sure the appliances actually work with the layout, not just alongside it. We work with AEG, Miele, Franke and Quooker, and we bring that into the design stage rather than treating appliances as an afterthought once the units are chosen.
Integrated AEG and Miele appliances, for instance, sit flush behind cabinetry fronts, which matters far more on a handleless range like Zola than it does on a traditional Shaker kitchen where an appliance can happily stand proud. A Quooker boiling water tap changes what you need under the sink and can free up a surprising amount of cupboard space if it is planned in from the start, rather than squeezed in afterwards. Franke sinks and taps come in enough finishes to match rather than fight with your chosen worktop and hardware. None of this is complicated, but it is far easier to get right at the design stage than to work around once units are ordered.

Your Design Presentation

Once a layout’s ready, we’ll invite you back into the Ongar showroom for a full presentation rather than just emailing over a PDF. You will see the design in 3D, go through every cabinet, worktop, and appliance choice, and have the chance to ask questions or request changes on the spot. We’ll also talk through delivery lead times at this stage, since some finishes and appliance combinations take longer to source than others, and it is better to know that before you set your heart on a date.
Most projects need at least one round of revisions after this first look, which is entirely normal. Better to adjust a digital layout now than a fitted kitchen later.

How Long the Design Process Takes

From your first visit to a finished, signed-off design usually takes somewhere between two and four weeks, depending on how many changes you want to make along the way and how quickly we can get back into your home for the measuring visit. A simple galley kitchen with one clear layout in mind can move faster; a full open-plan kitchen-diner with several options on the table naturally takes a little longer to get right. Either way, we would rather take the extra week than rush a layout you will be living with for the next fifteen years.

From Design Sign-Off to Installation Day

Once you’re happy and ready to go ahead, your design gets handed over to our fitting team, who work from the exact same measurements and layout your designer created, not a fresh set of notes from someone who’s never seen your kitchen.
