Photos are great for working out what you like. They are far less useful for telling you whether you will still like it in five years’ time. A door colour can look completely different under your own lighting, a handle can feel awkward the first time you grab it with wet hands, and an island that looks perfectly sized online can swallow a real room.
That is why a showroom visit is still one of the most useful steps in planning a new kitchen. The short answer: when you visit kitchen showrooms in Essex, look past the styling. Check how the cabinets are built, how the storage works, how worktops and appliances look at full size, and who will design, supply and fit the kitchen. Take rough measurements and a few photos of your room, so the conversation is about your home rather than the display.

What to Check in a Kitchen Showroom
Showroom displays are built to look good. Your job is to find out how they work, so open every door and drawer you can and stand where you would stand to cook. Start with the cabinets. Colour gets the first look, but construction is what you live with. Feel the weight of the doors, try the hinges and soft-close runners, and look at how the edges are finished. On a Shaker-style door, look closely at the joints and the paint around the frame. On a handleless kitchen, step back and look along a full run: the gaps should be even from one end to the other, because those straight lines are the whole point of the design.
Worktops are hard to judge from a small sample, so look at full slabs wherever you can. The pattern, veining and edge profile all change how the finished kitchen feels. At our Ongar showroom, you can compare full-size door samples with complete worktop slabs side by side, making it much easier to choose a combination. Scale matters too. Walk around an island, sit where the stools would go and open the drawers. As a rough guide, designers usually allow around a metre of clear space around an island, so two people can pass, and doors can open fully. Seeing full-size larder units and islands quickly shows you which ideas will work in your room and which need scaling down.
Finally, look at appliances in place rather than as a separate shopping list. Their size and position affect cabinet sizes, ventilation and sightlines. Kitchens by Guy works with AEG, Miele, Franke and Quooker, and the showroom has a full range of working AEG appliances on display, so you can see how they sit within the cabinetry before anything is ordered.
What to look at closely
- Door weight, hinges, soft-close drawers and edge finishing
- Worktop materials, thicknesses and edge profiles at full size
- Corner storage, pan drawers and larder units
- Island size and the space around it
- How integrated appliances line up with the cabinet fronts
Why seeing it in person helps
- You judge colours and finishes in real light, not on a screen
- You can test how drawers, hinges and storage actually work
- Full-size displays show what will fit your room and what will not
- You can compare German and British kitchen styles side by side
- You meet the people who would actually design your kitchen
What to Ask and Bring on Your Visit
The displays are only half of it. A showroom visit is also your chance to find out how the company works once you move from browsing to a real project: who measures, who designs, who fits, and who you call if something changes.
This is where the difference between showroom kitchens and real installs shows up. A display is built in perfect conditions. Your kitchen has to fit walls that are not quite square, pipes in awkward places and a household that uses it every day. A good kitchen designer will be more interested in how you cook and where the clutter builds up than in which door colour you have picked.
You do not need a finished plan. A few basics make the first conversation far more useful, and even a folder of saved photos you cannot quite explain helps. A designer can usually spot the colours, layouts and details you keep coming back to.
Questions to ask the designer
- Who will measure my home and draw the final design?
- Will the kitchen be made to order, or fitted from standard sizes?
- Can I choose supply only or full installation?
- Who will actually fit the kitchen – your own team or subcontractors?
- Who will be my point of contact if something changes?
What to bring with you
- Rough room measurements, including windows, doors and radiators
- Photos of your current kitchen, plus inspiration images you like
- The appliances you want and the storage problems you need to fix
- Any extension or building plans
- A rough budget and the timeframe you are working to
How to Decide
When you compare kitchen companies in Essex, the real question is not simply independent versus high-street chain. It is how much flexibility you get, who stays responsible for the project, and whether the kitchen is being designed around your room or your room is being squeezed into a catalogue layout.
Kitchens by Guy is a family-run, independent kitchen company in Ongar and a Premium Stori retailer, so we are not tied to one manufacturer. Our kitchen ranges run from the traditional Winslow and Arrington to the contemporary Zola and Zola Handleless. Every kitchen is made to order, and you can choose supply-only or a full design, supply, and installation service with our own fitting team.
The showroom is at 38 High Street, Ongar, CM5 9EA, and is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and Saturday, 10am to 3pm. You do not need an appointment to browse, but it is worth booking if you would like time with a designer. We also offer a free home design and measure, and work across Essex and North East London, including Chelmsford, Epping, Brentwood, Loughton, Chigwell, Buckhurst Hill, Woodford, Wanstead and Walthamstow.

FAQs
What should I look for in a kitchen showroom?
Look past the colours and styling. Check how the cabinets are built, how the drawers and hinges feel, what the worktops look like at full size, how the appliances are integrated and how the company handles design, supply and fitting.
What is the difference between showroom kitchens and real installs?
A showroom display is built in ideal conditions. A real install has to work with your walls, floors, pipework and daily routine. That is why a proper home measure matters: it turns a display you like into a design that actually fits your room.
What is the difference between high-street and independent kitchen suppliers?
High-street chains usually sell their own ranges in set sizes, and the process tends to be more standardised. An independent kitchen supplier can offer ranges from different manufacturers and plan the kitchen around your room. Kitchens by Guy is independent and family-run, and the person who designs your kitchen stays involved through to fitting.
Do I need an appointment to visit the Kitchens by Guy showroom?
No. You can browse during opening hours without an appointment. If you would like dedicated time with a designer, it is best to book ahead.
Where is the Kitchens by Guy showroom and when is it open?
The showroom is at 38 High Street, Ongar, Essex CM5 9EA. It is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and Saturday, 10am to 3pm, and closed on Sundays.
What can I see at the Ongar showroom?
Kitchen displays, full-size door samples, complete worktop slabs and a full range of working AEG appliances, so you can compare finishes and practical details in person.
Should I take measurements to a kitchen showroom?
Rough measurements help with the first conversation, but they do not replace a professional home measure. Kitchens by Guy surveys every project two to three times before delivery, so the final design matches the room.
Is the kitchen design consultation free?
Yes. You can have a free consultation in the showroom and a free home design and measure, with no obligation to go ahead.
Can I see a 3D design before I order?
Yes. Once your room has been measured, we prepare a detailed 3D design and invite you to the showroom to go through every detail before anything is ordered.
Which areas does the Ongar showroom serve?
We design, supply and fit kitchens across Essex and North East London, including Ongar, Chelmsford, Brentwood, Epping, Chigwell, Loughton, Buckhurst Hill, Woodford, Wanstead and Walthamstow.
